NaNoWriMo Day 10: Blockage, Mass Effect and other stuff... [10 Nov 2009|09:27pm]

[ mood | okay ]

Ugh...Mass Effect is the enemy of my productivity. Seriously. I completed a number of the sub-quests and my first main mission after earning my Spectre status, but none of it helped me get words down for the NaNo novel. Oyyy. -_-

In any case, I've come across a bit of a block, so I only got about 500 words done today. I'm going to call it a night and sleep on it. Maybe I'll figure out where to go next after I've had some rest and taken a bit of a break from it. If not, I'll just skip ahead to the next part, which I know what to do for.

On the subject of Mass Effect, the reason I've been playing it so much lately, is I'm trying to complete the game with a character for each of the six different careers before Mass Effect 2 comes out next year. The two characters I'm currently working with at the moment are my uber-nice and uber-mean characters. In other words, one should be near enough 100% Paragon by the time I'm finished, and the other should be 100% Renegade. As for the last two, I'm not sure about them yet. Maybe I'll do the same again, but switch the genders around or something.

Anyway, after some nagging from my mother, I called up the estate agents to see if they can find out how much longer it'll be before our boiler is turned back on. The chimney repairs seem to be over, so I see no further reason to freeze my knackers off in my own flat. So, I called them and they said they'll find out about that for me.

That's pretty much all the news for today.

NaNoWriMo Day 9: 300 word target, Stargate GMing plans and other stuff... [09 Nov 2009|01:30pm]

Well, I managed to hit yesterday's target in good time, but I'm still just over three hundred words away from today's target. Luckily I do have a little spare time before my jobcentre appointment, and then I might be able to squeeze in a little time after I get back before heading up to the uni to run tonight's game.

Just in case anyone's interested, I'll tell you what I've got planned for tonight's game, and for the overall campaign story arc. For anyone who may be playing in the Stargate SG-10 RP at Stirling Uni, please skip ahead to the next LJ cut now. Spoilers! Yes this includes you, Colin. =_=

Stargate SG-10 - 'Season Three' plans )

Anyway, not much else to report for today. I've got to make a call to Jobseekers Direct to get some details on how to apply for one of the job vacancies I've found, then I've got to follow up on that however they tell me to. After that, I've got just over 300 words to write before my jobcentre appointment. Then I've got the game to run tonight.

So, yeah, better get to it. ^_^;

WHO ELSE IS DOING IT?!

Yes, well, anyway.

I'm far too much of a wuss to do it with my own characters, so I decided to take a stab at it with some fanfiction.

As it so happens, my best friend and I happen to both be writing about two completely unrelated crazy blond guys named James who killed their wives and have obnoxious pint-sized female sidekicks.

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.

Okay, so I fell behind a bit yesterday, and today was a real struggle to catch up. I put off writing today's entry until now because I needed all the time I could get to catch up to today's target. So, Day 7 is actually over now, but here is a brief report of the day's events.

After procrastinating by playing Mass Effect (again!), and after cooking myself yet another pizza for dinner (yay for healthy eating), I sat down at my computer, logged onto the Nanaodaysprints room on AIM, and worked solidly from 5:30pm til 11:50pm trying to make both yesterdays and today's word count targets before midnight.

It was only by using Write or Die that I finally managed to meet the word quota for today. I even overshot it slightly, it motivated me so much that I didn't even notice I had gone over the number of words I set for myself. Heh.

Anyway, I'm back on par again, and hopefully I'll be able to stay that way. I even intend to start building up a buffer for myself starting tomorrow. I'll need it on Monday, since I'm not going to get as much time to do any writing, what with my Jobcentre signing appointment in the afternoon, then the Stargate RP in the evening. But hopefully I'll even manage to get my1667 word quota in for the Monday as well. Here's hoping. Anyway, I'm off to do some RP on IRC now that I'm up to date with my NaNo. ^_^

I'm wrapping up my day with a grand total of 12,053 words. Go me!

I've been thinking about doing this for ages and finally got around to it. I think it turned out pretty well XD
So here is my take on what happened with the Gyromancy (which, according to wikipedia, is a method of divination in which a person spins around inside or walks the circumference of a circle drawn on the ground, the perimeter of which is marked with the letters of an alphabet.)

Whoops. Let myself get distracted playing through Mass Effect with my soldier character, gonna have to make this a short entry so I can make today's word count target, and then I'm gonna leave it there for the day.

Not really much to tell anyway, I paid my £20 for the 2010 Student Nationals in Edinburgh, it'll be my first year going as a veteran. Other than that, nothing else worth mentioning to be honest.

Hasn't been a very eventful day today.

Evanescence Return to the Stage at "Secret" New York Gig
11/5/09, 9:29 am EST

Photo: Noam Galai
It was a chant that hadn’t been heard in Manhattan in more than two years, and it started a little after 9 p.m., as the anxious crowd who packed out the Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom started growing more and more impatient: "EVAN-ES-SCENTS, EVAN-ES-SCENTS." And though the last time Amy Lee floated across a stage George W. Bush was in office, you wouldn’t have been able to tell from the band’s adept, hard-charging performance.

But as the Evanescence frontwoman explained to the audience at last night’s extremely intimate secret concert, the one-off performance was quite necessary. After all, on November 8th, Evanescence will be performing before 40,000 screaming fans at the Maquinaria Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the band needed a little limbering up before heading south. “Thanks for being our guinea pigs,” Lee joked to the mostly female crowd.

With Evanescence hard at work on the follow-up to 2006’s The Open Door, it’ll be another year before they’re back in New York, making last night’s concert a one-of-a-kind experience for the band’s rabid fans, who sold out the show in five minutes.

Lee, looking rested and donning bulky black boots and a multi-colored dress that looked like it was stolen from the Project Runway work room, commanded the stage, stretching her operatic pipes and stomping across the stage like a pixie on speed during the set’s opener, “Going Under,” her voice as crisp and smoky as ever. The band, featuring fill-in guitarist James Black from Finger Eleven, sounded tight, and ripped through cuts like “The Only One” and “Missing” for the mesmerized audience, who hoisted smart phones and Flip cams in the air, recording every minute.

After "Haunted," the band pummeled the crowd through "Lithium," with Lee swaying and bouncing around the stage, pumping her fists in the air. The anguish in Lee’s voice was palpable, and the band skillfully replicated live what they do on tape. Next came "Good Enough," with Lee stroking the ivories and delivering her lyrics with an elegant sweetness reminiscent of Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan.

After "Whisper," Lee and the band launched into the anthemic "Call Me When You’re Sober," which had everyone in the place headbanging along with Lee, whose hair whipped in circles wildly as she belted out the chorus. As the song ended, a fan tossed up a teddy bear that was intended for Lee, but ended up in the grip of a stage hand.

The audience sang every lyric back at Lee during “Bring Me to Life,” which was followed by "All That I’m Living For" and "Taking Over Me." Then came "Lacrymosa" with Lee going solo for "My Immortal," a song that’s become something of an Alanis Morissette-like battle hymn for her Goth disciples over the last few years. Before leaving the stage, Lee thanked her fans for being so supportive for so long, and promised new material was on the way.

NaNoWriMo Day 3: Character building, sprints and other stuff... [03 Nov 2009|01:02pm]

[ music | V For Vendetta - Evey Reborn ]

Okay, so I'm currently standing at 3448 words, and I need to get to at least 5000 by the end of the day to stay on par.

A few things I've done - beyond simply writing the story - in order to help me along are to take a tea break in Beanscene and participating in writing sprints on AIM.

The tea break at Beanscene I spent with my Moleskine journal in front of me, writing down ideas about who my character is, what he likes, what his family are like and so forth. I got maybe about a paragraph or two written about him, but he's still not as developed as I'd like him to be. Then again, part of the fun of writing is that you discover the character as you go.
Something that might be worth a try at some point is typing out a conversation between myself and my character, which may allow me to get into his head a bit more.

Other than that, I spent from about 2 til 5 yesterday doing writing sprints on AIM. The basic idea of a writing sprint is that at certain times past the hour a mod IMs everyone to start writing for 10/15/20 minutes, then IMs them to stop at the end of the given time period. Then everyone shares their total word counts during that time. Technically this is nothing I couldn't do myself, but doing it with other people is kind of fun.

Anyway, I have until midnight tonight to write another 1552 words at least, though I'm going to try for more if I can, and if possible I'm hoping I can get down the number of words I need by 6 o'clock tonight. I also need to try and write that CYOA post at some point during the day as well. I think I'll go and do that right now before I let myself get consumed by writing this novel again. ^_^;

Fucking fucking fuck fuck fuck.

I hate Sleep Paraysis, its bloody horrible. Having it 5 times in a row in quick succession and being left extreamly tired and fighting sleep because you know it'll happen again is what i'll describe as a waking nightmare.

Especially when you have work (plus overtime) and a flat to clean tommorow

NaNoWriMo Day 2: Aiming for 4000 words, CYOAs and diet changes... [02 Nov 2009|02:43pm]

lost_zeppo
[ mood | creative ]
[ music | Bear McCreary - So Much Life ]

Alright, I managed to get 1962 words done yesterday for my NaNo novel. Feeling like there's room for improvement with the opening, and the characters and world need some fleshing out, but hopefully I can work those issues out as I go. My aim for today is to get to at least 4000 words by the end of the night. I managed close to 2000 words by 9 o'clock last night, and I've done 2000 word essays in one night during university, so keeping up with 2000 per day as a target shouldn't be too difficult, especially as at this point I'm not worrying too much about plotting in advance. I know this is only the first draft and that once I get round to the rewriting stage things will probably end up changing significantly as I work on it more.

In addition to reaching the 4000 word mark with my novel, I also need to try and write a short update for the Choose Your Own Adventure thread I'm running on the Evageeks.org forums. I've left it for longer than I should have.

Also gonna take a crack at cooking myself some rice for a change tonight. I've been living off of ready meals and oven-cooked pizzas for weeks now and I doubt it's doing me any favours.

Other than that, not much else to report. I'll try and post again tomorrow.
